Book Choice: The Grapes of Wrath
BOOK Summary
Set during the Great Depression, the novel focuses on the Joad family.
With resources scarce, the Joad family was driven from their home by drought, economic hardship, agricultural industry changes, and bank foreclosures. They lose nearly everything but each other. Due to their nearly hopeless situation-and in part because they are trapped in the Dust Bowl-the Joads set out for California along with thousands of other. Will they be able to stick together while reaching for a better life? Will the land of opportunity live up to it’s name? You’ll find out as you join the Joad family on their journey-along with other “Oakies”- seeking hope jobs, land, dignity and a future... on a path filled with loss, heartache, corruption and devestations.

Designer’s Choice Book Cover:
This choice in book cover is successful because it combined the symbols of life and hope with the symbols of death. In the story, it’s the dust that is destroying everything. So the spattering of dust in the composition shows how destroys in the beautiful white background. The flower is a Rose of Sharon, which is the name of one of the characters in the story. Rose of Sharon is often used to symbolize hope, life, love and potential. When combining the two and having the Rose of Sharon on top of the destructive earth, it’s showing how the family survives despite all the difficulties, prejudices and devestations they face along the way.

This typographical cover is successful because it shows theme of the circle of life and death throughout the book in the vines. It also shows the simple beauty of life in the bold green minimalistic type, as a symbol of the beauty in the simplicity of life and how family can bring us growth and stability.

Handmade Material Book Cover:
This book cover is successful because it portrays the raw emotion in the book. There is only shown one cluster of grapes which shows the scarcity of the resources at that time. The cracks in the wall represents how society is failing the people at the time and how everything seems to be falling apart. The hands themselves represent the people. Not only are they reaching for better, but they seem to be in agony; but in order for them to reach what they need, they need to support each other in the process. The font reflects the coloring of grapes and wine to show the blood spilt and the loved ones lost for those that are still continuing on.
